Karl Kjarsgaard from the Bomber Command Museum of Canada and Halifax 57 Rescue has a question about a Wellington W5584 – RAF 148 squadron shot down on Jan.19, 1942 into the bay 4 kms south of Eleusis, close to the port of Piraeus in Greece.
There were 5 aircrew on board including 1 Canadian, all still missing.
Despite the fact that the chances are slim, as Eleusis bay is quite busy and not an easy spot to scuba dive, because of heavy marine traffic, it would be interesting to see whether anyone has any information related to this aircraft wreck.
Karl Kjarsgaard Curator at the Bomber Command Museum of Canada sent to www.ww2wrecks.com the following photo and information:
“The Niece of one of the Canadian airmen missing on board Wellington W5584 asked me, because of my 2 past underwater recoveries of Halifax bombers, if I knew anybody who might know where the W5584 is laying.
Here attached is a very rare, nice photo of the RAF-RCAF crew of Wellington W5584. The Uncle of the niece is T H McGrath RCAF – upper right.”
