Mr. Karolos Lambrou, contacted www.ww2wrecks.com and provided some photos with the following description:
“During a spearfishing excursion in Leros in the summer of 1979, I ran into the wreck of this aircraft engine nacelle that was in front of a car repair shop.
Definitely British, English markings on the magneto casing, probably a Bristol type.”
Judging by the landing gear structure and engine type, we can safely say it is from a Bristol Beaufighter, as several were shot down around Leros island, in 1943.
According to respected aviation researcher Mr. Ioannis Mylonas, between 10 and 16 November 1943, 7 Beaufighter Mk.X were lost in the area of Leros Island of which 4 belonged to 47 Sqn, 2 to 46 Sqn and 1 to 603Sqn
Obviously, the lingering question is what have these precious relics become, since 1979? Have they been preserved, or lost for ever?
