By Pierre Kosmidis

The city of Nafpaktos, or Lepanto, is widely known for the naval battle that took place o n October 7,1571, in which the Christian states of Europe defeated the Ottoman fleet.

Miguel de Cervantes, the world famous Spanish author, was wounded during this naval encounter.

On April 26, 1941 the German invasion of Greece, codenamed Operation Marita, was in full swing and elements of the 1. SS-Panzerdivision “Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler” reached the old port of Nafpaktos.

The nazis commandeered fishing boats and other vessels and crossed the Gulf of Patras, in their attempt to secure the city of Patras and cut down the retreat of the Allied forces.

In this photo, we can see German forces getting ready to embark the fishing boats in 1941, overimposed on a 2018 google street view snip.
